Our homes don’t just belong to us, they also belong to our animal companions, especially the four-legged ones. With the increase in pet ownership, it’s important to consider the likely future with a pet in your home and design your home accordingly.

Here are some ways to make your home friendly to your four-legged friend:

1. Choose a suitable floor covering

Choosing the right flooring can make all the difference for your pet. You can opt for the purchase of tiles for your space gloss or matte finish. Glossy tiles are easier to clean, while matte finish tiles increase traction and reduce the risk of slipping. You can also opt for other durable and easy-to-clean flooring options, such as vinyl, cement or luxury stone flooring. If you want to add a mat, make sure the color is similar to your pet’s fur so shedding is less noticeable. Mats also provide a cushioned surface for your pet to sleep or walk on and reduce noise generated by footsteps.

2. Upholstery that remains without fur

Another thing to keep in mind when designing your home is the upholstery you choose for your furniture. It is best to avoid fabrics like velvet or corduroy as they are fur magnets and it will be very difficult for you to clean them. Also, avoid using delicate materials like silk, as your pet’s claws can and will damage them. You can opt for synthetic fibers and leathers instead. These have a double advantage: they do not attract fur and are not damaged by their claws!

3. Personalized space for their food bowls

More often than not, when we visit pet homes, we see food bowls lying on the floor or in a corner of the room. When designing your home, keep aesthetics in mind and create a dedicated space for their food bowls. It could be slots in the base of your side table to hold their bowls in place, or a pull-out drawer that can help keep clutter contained in one space.

4. Create a dedicated space for your pet

This space can be anywhere – at the entrance to your home or in the hallway. Add storage here to store everything like toys, snacks, and pet-safe litter. If space permits, add a small spray and basin to clean your pets once they return from their walks. Remember to use good quality anti-tick products in this area to keep your home tick-free.

5. Neat and clean kitchens

Creating a pet-friendly space requires you to keep your space as clean as possible. This isn’t just for the safety of your furry friends, but it’s also so your home doesn’t look unsightly with their food bowls lying around. As mentioned earlier, try to create a dedicated corner or space for your pet’s bowls to avoid nasty messes.

6. A station to wash your pet

If you can bathe your pet perfectly in your bathroom, your back would thank you if you set up an elevated area with a basin and a water jet where you can give him a bath without constantly bending over. Add some storage underneath to hold their laundry detergent or shampoo. It is best to use tiles in this area, as they are easy to clean and have minimal porosity.

7. Add a door between your entrance and your living room

Walks are inevitable with our furry friends (especially dogs). Being covered in mud is also unavoidable. But, having your living room furniture covered in mud can be avoided by adding a simple door that will prevent your pet from running into the living space while messy. As mentioned earlier, create a dedicated space for your dog in the entryway or hallway where you can clean it up before you let it in. If adding a washing area is not possible, store enough pet wipes and treats in the area to at least clean your pet before you can take them to the bathroom to wash away the mud.

Pets aren’t just animals we bring into our homes to provide emotional support or companionship; they are an integral part of our families. And like any other member of the family, they also deserve to have their needs met. Creating a space that is not only safe for them, but also accommodates their needs can help make your home feel like home too! After all, they are in our lives for a short period of time, but we are a major component of their lives.
