With winter approaching, it’s a good time to get your dog’s Walkin’ Wheels dog wheelchair tuned up.
Time for a winter wheelchair tune-up
As the seasons change and winter is just around the corner, it’s time to ask yourself if your dog’s wheels are ready for the snow. Would a little more tread on the tires help your dog navigate those snowy sidewalks and icy streets?
Our cars aren’t the only ones that need a quick condition check before the snow falls. Your dog’s wheelchair gets a lot of wear and tear throughout the year. To navigate snow and ice, your dog’s wheelchair tires must have good tread. It could mean your dog’s tire rotation, or it’s time for new wheels.
Understanding your wheel options
Dogs under 49 lbs.
Dogs in Mini, Small or Corgi Walkin’ Wheels wheelchairs must use our foam wheels. Tiny puppies need small wheels, although it may be tempting to try increasing the wheel size, we don’t recommend it. A wheel that is too big can make your dog’s wheelchair too big and heavy. The same goes for dogs that fit in our average wheelchair, weighing between 26 and 49 pounds. usually have an 8″ wheel. Always call our wheelchair experts before exchanging a wheelchair part.
Dogs over 50 lbs.
Dogs between 50 and 180 lbs. have a few different wheel options available. In addition to getting new foam wheels to replace the old ones, larger dogs can also use pneumatic tires. An air tire has a deeper tread, providing better grip on rougher terrain. For most pets, a foam wheel provides enough traction, but you may want to swap wheels for the winter if you live in an icy area.

Not only is the Warrior Rear Dog Harness wheelchair compatible, it can also be used to help your dog up stairs or into the car.
Front harness
The Warrior Front Harness fits all sizes of dogs and is compatible with Small, Medium and Large Walkin’ Wheels wheelchairs. This harness slips easily over a dog’s head and clips directly into the rear dog wheelchair. The harness gives your dog’s wheelchair a real upgrade.
belly support
Many roller dogs suffer from spinal problems or a weak back. A belly support is a neoprene sling that lifts the center of your dog’s body. By supporting under the abdomen, you can keep your dog’s spine in proper alignment and provide additional support. Mid-body support is especially important for dogs with IVDD, back pain, or those whose back dips in the middle.
While beneficial for all dogs, every corgi, dachshund or basset hound in a wheelchair needs tummy support.
