I have been told that puppy food has too much calcium and protein causing them to grow too fast causing hip problems. I still feed mine Purina pro plan lamb and rice. She is 8 years old and still very healthy and active.

We use a diamond at all stages of life brand foods. Because it was good for our pup and also for our older Danes so they didn’t need to have two separate foods. When we have a puppy mark, the eldest would want to eat it and the baby wants his food. Too much hassle to keep it separate and our local foods and seeds recommended it. The older common name brands got fussy and eventually stopped liking them and didn’t want to eat. But she loved this brand.

Every Dane is different, start slow, let them adapt. It also depends on what you can afford as well as what is good for your pup. We all have great meal plans for our Danes, but where do you start as a lifetime meal plan? You will run into some suggestion conflicts, if the rescue is large breed specific, I would work more closely with them if they had the pup. Your vet sees your pup for a few seconds of its life, the rescue has spent time working with the pup. sorry if this bothers some people, but those are the words of a vet to me. Good luck, be patient, take it easy, and do your homework.

We have had great success with the 4health brand of Tractor supply co. Their large breed food has one of the highest protein and glucosamine chondroitin levels I have found. It’s also not a very expensive 45lb bag ~$50-$55 depending on region/sales.

We use Big Breed Yam chicken nuggets. We got him at eight weeks and he refused to eat puppy type food. Checked with the vet, he said the protein level was fine. He is now 4 years old and weighs 180 lbs. we feed it for free so that it is there when it wants. Don’t gorge yourself that way.
