April Holidays for Cats – April 30 is Pet Shelter Adoption Day, World Vet Day, National Animal Therapy Day, National Pet Day and more!
I Missed Hairball Awareness Day Yesterday, But If Your Cats Have Hairballs, It May Help Vet 101: Cat Hairballs
I will focus on what is important to us, pet adoption and the future of veterinary medicine. As my cats are getting older and require more frequent veterinary care, I am more respectful of veterinary medicine. We’ve come a really long way. It’s not just about the vets or their team, it’s about how veterinary practices implement innovation with advances in science.
One of the things that bothered me during the pandemic was being prevented from observing my vet’s examination. In fact, our vet still does sidewalk service.
I love this veterinary practice where the walls are made of clear glass. PARC owner Dr. Steve Hotchkiss talks about his revolutionary vision to create the kind of transparency that makes animals and owners comfortable in an environment that supports veterinary well-being.
I know we have a few shelter pet vacations but Adopt a National Pet Shelter It is a particularly important reminder. It’s cat season and you know what that means: 3 out of 4 kittens born will die. There are not enough nursing homes and the shelters are extra full.
How can you celebrate other than adoption? Please add anything I missed in the comments.
- Check the website of your local animal shelter. Check out the types of pets available. Maybe they have more big dogs or black cats. If there is any tension in your heart, share his profile on social media. Remember to use hashtags like #adorableadoptable, #adoptdontshop #adoptashelterpetday
- Donates. It’s not just about money. Most shelters have Amazon or other wish lists outlining what they need most. It might be specific products or food to buy or things to donate like old towels.
- Consider volunteering. Shelters offer many options from caring for the cats or kittens in your home, socializing or exercising the pets at the shelter, helping with fundraising or social media etc.
- Be the best pet parent possible. This means taking full responsibility for a pet’s life on every level. Nutrition, wellness, veterinary care, environmental enrichment, microcutting, and other safety measures. When in doubt, take responsibility to learns.
- Spread awareness about the event. It’s amazing how we can make a difference by telling someone or sharing a drawing or post like this. It has often been copied or stolen over the years, but this one is original with new frontiers.
A publicist sent me some new pet-related items and I really love the new Workman pet keepsake magazines. Clever prompts will help create a forever story/memento no matter how old your cat or dog is. I can’t think of a better gift for someone who has adopted a cat or a dog. There is a diary of a cat and a dog. (Amazon affiliate links).
April 30 is also National Animal Therapy Day Created by Pet Partners in 1977 To promote the health and wellness benefits of animal-assisted therapy, activities, and education. With over 10,000 registered teams making more than 3 million visits annually, Pet Partners operates as the most diverse and respected nonprofit organization in the country registering handlers of multiple types as volunteer teams. Pet Partners teams visit with patients in recovery, people with intellectual disabilities, seniors with Alzheimer’s disease, students, veterans with PTSD, people who have experienced crisis events, and those nearing the end of life, with the aim of Improving human health and well-being.
Every cat lover knows how healing and supportive cats can be regardless of the ups and downs of life through The bond between man and animal.
These days, every color and every breed has a holiday dedicated to cats. April 30 is National Admonition Day. Who is your favorite Tabby?
Tabby cats are very popular but they are actually not a breed. They are categorized into 5 different patterns: classic or spotted, mackerel, spotted, spotted and spotted.
- The classic tabby has swirls of contrasting markings like a marble cake. If it is circular on the side, it is called a bullseye.
- Mackerel or tiger fish has narrow vertical stripes on both sides which can resemble a fish skeleton hence the name. They have a striped tail.
- The spotted tab has large or small dots in a pattern on both sides.
- The burner tabby is also called the Agouti, which belongs to the Abyssinian breed. They have no visible passing streaks on their sides.
- Patched is also known as tortoiseshell or tortoiseshell. These cats have a mixture of two or three colors of tabby.
The most common tabby colors are orange or gray. They can be long or short-haired but they all have vertical inscription or “M” markings above their eyes. Most tabs have a white patch but the white patches must be all over for it to be considered bicolor.
Odin is an example of a tabby with a white mixture known as Bicolor or Piebald and insisted on its inclusion.
And if that’s not enough to honor or celebrate, how about a new moon that makes an eclipse!
It is the height of spring and the unofficial season of summer. I’ll do some campfire cooking and bonfires on May Day, Beltan, Walpurgisnacht, Hella, or Fabo, as my Finnish ancestors call them. It’s time to go a little wild, shake off the leftovers of winter, do a crazy cat dance, and feel the energies of the earth grow in the fecundity and charm of cats. Ironically, pagan holidays have Christian undertones but I love it interpretation of the north
We usually associate cats and fires with Halloween but May 1st is another time when the veil is thin between the visible and invisible worlds. This is an excellent time to remember, honor and connect with our ancestors and beloved pets OTRB.
Whatever you are celebrating this weekend, be sure to take care of your precious pets.
love and purr,
Layla, Odin and No Nu
PS We have a new cat mom collection today. Mostly T-shirts, mugs and mugs but the link goes to only one T-shirt. poke around.
Wouldn’t this be a fun T-shirt but in what word? Beltane, Labor Day or Halloween?
