Cyrus and Nova, two gray cats, were brought in Stevie rescue, a volunteer-based cat rescue in Nashville, Tennessee. They walked with a wobbly gait and were instant cuddles.

The couple was born from a stray cat, in a litter of four, in a rural area, before finding shelter in the family barn. “It was clear early on that Cyrus and Nova were evolutionarily different from their other siblings,” Brianna Parkerone of the volunteers in the rescue, told Love Meow.

The researchers reached out to Saving Stevie, hoping to get the care they need for the cats to thrive. The rescue team welcomed them with open arms and immediately arranged a nursing home for them.

Both Cyrus and Nova have cerebellar hypoplasia (CH), a non-progressive, not painful, neurological condition. “It usually occurs when the mother becomes infected with pancreatic leukopenia when she is pregnant, and it is passed on to her unborn kittens,” Saving Stevie said.

Brianna was contacted to promote the wobbly duo, while another volunteer took the other two brothers. “Cyrus and Nova were my first special-needs foster cats, and I feel so lucky that Stevie’s rescue trusted me,” Briana said.

“When I picked them up they were a bit nervous, but after getting into the car home and settling in that night, Cyrus and Nova grew up feeling comfortable and safe.”

Brother and sister quickly adapted to a comfortable inner life. From the start, they set out to live each day to the fullest, and they wouldn’t let anything stop them from having a good time. If they falter, they turn back and continue to rig like a pro.

Cyrus is a ball of energy and a true mischief maker. He is very passionate when he is around people, and he seeks their attention and play.

Briana shared with Love Meow: “The second time people see him wobble his head, in signature CH style, he starts rushing towards you. He’s never met a stranger, he loves to be held, and he’ll instantly purr very loudly.”

“Cyrus has developed a hopping technique to move faster. It’s the perfect definition of a happy, lucky cat.”

Nova is a kind and gentle soul who sways at every opportunity to be near her humans. Being menacing, brooding, and rocking to sleep puts her in cloud nine. It has established itself as the beloved love bug in the house, and lives up to that title every day.

“She has a more difficult time moving than Cyrus, since her hind legs are immobile, however, that does not prevent her from following him and playing.”

Brianna designed a play mat with stick toys attached, so Nova can enjoy playing with extra support and comfort. The rude girl doesn’t shy away from being slapped in stately whenever she notices one.

“Cyrus and Nova have always had a strong will to grow, learn and play. They really don’t know they are different.”

From the day they took their first faltering steps into foster care, they felt at home as if they had always been part of the family.

They flock to their people for attention and pets, playing with their hearts as if there is no tomorrow. They love to curl up in a ball when they are carried around, and enjoy every moment they spend with their people.

“When I realized they were comfortable with me and began to learn and grow in the air-conditioned space I created for them, I knew I wanted to adopt them forever. These oscillations stole my heart,” Brianna shared with Love Meow.
